{tasty tuesday - birthday breakfast}

My mouth is already watering! Happy Tasty Tuesday, friends! Since this is my birthday week, I decided to share one of my favorite birthday traditions growing up and a recipe! Having a late August birthday, it usually fell either on the first day of school or very close to it. My sister and I also celebrate our birthdays 3 days apart! My parents always did a great job of letting us feel "extra" special on our actual birthay {even if it was the first day of school}. I'm pretty sure my sis {Jess} and I requested the same birthday breakfast for as long as I can remember {even better, we got to have it 2 times in the same week}! I remember waking up to the aroma of French Toast and walking up to the breakfast table to find the infamous red plate at "my spot"! We only got to use the "red plate" on our birthday, so it always made it even more fun to eat off of! You know what I'm talking about?!?!

Look familiar? Josh and I were thrilled to get one as a wedding gift {and have already continued the tradition in our little household}!

So by now, I've already told you my breakfast of choice....French Toast! Yes and yes! No one made French Toast like my mama {at least in my eyes}!! I've mentioned on my blog multiple times that I absolutely love traditions! It puts a smile on my face even getting to share my birthday breakfast tradition with y'all! ;) Okay, I'll stop now!

I came across a recipe that looked very similar to the one my mom would make. We weren't ever big on dipping ours in syrup, but rather loved getting to sprinkle tons of powder sugar all.over.the.place! Fun memories!

French Toast Sticks

4 slices thick-cut bread
3 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 tbsp melted butter, slightly cooled
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a large baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.

Cut bread slices into thirds and set aside.

In a large shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, melted butter, vanilla and ground cinnamon. One at a time, dunk the bread sticks into the egg batter, letting the excess drip off. Place each bread stick onto the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 16-20 minutes or until lightly golden in color. Halfway through the baking time, flip over the bread sticks and spray with the tops again with non-stick cooking spray.

Sprinkle warm french toast sticks with powdered sugar, if desired, and serve.

Hope you enjoy as much as the birthday girls always did {and continue to do}!!!

how cute! I'll have to try this French Toast sticks recipe, I love french toast, and I've attempted to make it before but it didn't come out that good, some were too soggy and some so dry. Thanks for sharing!

We do the same thing with the special red plate on birthdays! I grew up with my parents doing breakfast in bed for us, so the tradition is carried on in my fam:)
